On Februrary 4 I arrived in Darwin, Australia. At the airport I could book a bed immediately and over the weeks in this big continent I was surprised how good the backpacker network actually worked. Just phone them and make a reservation or ask at the greyhound station where people from hostels are waiting to make good offers for potential guests. High Service, low costs!
Same in New Zealand with the difference that hostels are even better than in Oz-country. Big kitchens, nice sleeping rooms and acceptable prices in a range from 16-23 NZ$ per night. And than I came to the states and the problems started.....
May 31: hard to find the information desk at L.A. airport and they don't do hostels usually, really unfriendly help desk. The Hostel rose the price over night from 20 to 25 $ whereas the kitchen, sleeping and bedrooms were just a big joke (Venice Beach Cotel). Cooking impossible. Internet 1$ 10 min. Phonecards not working as they do in other parts in the world, cause you have to pay 99$ per call (!).
June 2-4: trying to get a hostel in San Diego for the weekend. booked out but they write in the internet I should phone them so did I. Result the same, no space, look at the internet they said. Another guy got a bed 1 hour later so I phoned back and got the same answer. pure chaos!!! and that from 5 hostels for the whole san diego thingi. Problems to find a transport, public transport in L.A. catastrophal. Ticket service of Amtrak/L.A. really really bad. Train ride double priced than bus ride but O.K.
June 4: Poped in directly to Ocean Beach Hostel. Result: I should look in the internet because they could not tell me anything at the reception (!!!!!). So I wrote them an e-mail and the answer was I should give them a phone call or come in and ask at reception. chaos!!!
June 9: finding a transportation to san francisco is almost impossible. Amtrak: 15 hours, 104 $. Greyhound: 11 hours, 57$. Direct shuttle from L.A.: out of order. No discounts in the country of discounts possible. Hostel booking over USAHostels absolutely no problem :o)))
June 15: check in Qantas from 7 am possible, but it was hard to get this information. People were searching the check in terminal and no signs at all. Service Qantas America: really really bad! N.Y. airport, the ground transportation information desk knows whether were my bus nor when my bus to Pannsilvania departs (!!!). Its impossible to get a change for a 20$ bill, only if i buy sth. => no service at all!
June 16: trying to book a hostel in Boston as the following e-mails shows up:
"Hi!
I'd like to make a reservation from June 18 to June 23 in a dorm. The HI
Boston Hostel I found over www.hostels.com and I'm a bit confused of the
prices. If I'd book a 16 mix dorm, the definition says 3 beds and more per
dorm. Can't I directly make a reservation for a 8 or 10 bed dorm that is in
the price range between 22 - 30 $? That would be great!
Thanks for responding,
Till"
answer:
"Hi,
If you make a reservation here by telephone or e-mail, the cost is $35 per
night. But you might be able to find a cheaper price online.
Sincerely,
HI-Boston"
NO Answer to my questions. No Service. Just book a dorm and perhaps you have 3, 5, 8, 10, 12 or 16 people in your room but its less expensive.
Conclusion:
Up to now I had no good experiences with the american travel culture. Staff people from Hostels could not help me with bookings of trains or buses despite the usahostel in San Francisco. From that point I can NOT recommend the USA as a country for backpackers. Its more stressful than to have a nice holiday in an interesting surrounding. I'm really pissed off from the States and I won't return for backpacking - thats for sure! The only thing you can do is to plan the whole trip with motels/hotels and to rent a car but only in the countryside because you won't find a free parking space in the big cities. I'd like to come back to visit friends than making "holiday" here and thats a pity! The Service system reminds me very strong of germany but I think its in the meantime better in our country than here!
